STYLE ICON OF THE MOMENT

Kate Lanphear ex-Elle style director (and constant street style bait) has joined T: The New York Times Style Magazine as style director. She describes herself as the "biggest fashion geek" — she has an insatiable appetite for all things sartorial and spends her weekends poring over old magazines, books, and photographs. Originally from Virginia, her fashion career began in Australia, where she took any and every fashion-related job she could find, working late nights as a bartender to pay the rent. Eventually she scored work at Australian Vogue and Australian Harper's Bazaar; eight years later, she returned to the States and took a job at American Harper's Bazaar. It wasn't long before her work caught the attention of Elle, who made her an offer she couldn't refuse.
Old Helmut Lang and Margiela collector, with taste for religious iconography and i-pads, the "epitome of the modern-day punk" appeared heavenly cool in the 2010's Borgo's campaign and even after that can't see why she's so tumblrable.

Despite the fact that she is a successful 35-year-old fashion editor, her style can nonetheless remind you of your punky phase from back in high school. She never wears make-up and abuses from black, leather and layerings that are always put perfectly together.

Kate Lanphear's day-to-day looks offer a working example of how to wear black (without ever looking boring).

"That’s the thing about fashion: You can use it to hide, but it’s only magic when you use it to express who you really are."
